Targeted
Colorectal Cancer Awareness Program
TCCAP
The Northeast Regional
Cancer Institute has initiated a multi-year, multi-dimensional Targeted
Colorectal Cancer Awareness Program (TCCAP) to increase awareness about
colorectal cancer and the benefits of screening in Luzerne, Lackawanna,
Wyoming, Wayne, Pike, and Susquehanna counties.
While colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the United
States, it is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in Northeastern
Pennsylvania, and the second leading cause of cancer death. When
detected early, survival rates are over 90%.
Through data collected by the Regional Cancer Registry and the
Epidemiology Research Program, the Cancer Institute has developed a
comprehensive awareness campaign that includes education for the
community and healthcare professionals, a targeted mailing to encourage
screening for colorectal cancer, and a widespread media campaign.
For more information about the Targeted Colorectal Cancer Awareness
Program please contact the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute at

The
Epidemiology Research Program at the Northeast Regional
Cancer Institute, under the direction of Samuel Lesko, MD,
MPH, has found that colorectal cancer is twenty percent
higher in Northeast Pennsylvania compared to state and
national averages. This data led the Cancer Institute to
begin a pilot project in 2003 to target colorectal cancer
awareness. The program, identified as Targeted Colorectal
Cancer Awareness Program (TCCAP) aimed to provide education
programs for healthcare professionals and the community.
Moving
forward, the program has continued to address and expand
colorectal cancer awareness and prevention with community
and healthcare professional programming in Northeast
