Education & Outreach

Education
The Cancer Institute offers programs that educate the general community and health care professionals about the prevention, early detection and treatment of cancer. The Cancer Institute also serves as an information and referral source to enlighten cancer survivors on local, regional, and national support groups/services available to serve specific cancer needs of area residents. The Cancer Institute partners with many organizations to provide current, clinically-sound information to the residents of Northeast Pennsylvania.

Community Education

Outreach
The Cancer Institute has instituted a new facet to our Community Education Programs.  Building on the success of over ten years of programming we are now looking to take our programs to “where the people are”.   Our staff, trained in medicine, nursing, social work, cancer genetics, and public health is available to go out to businesses, public pools, golf courses, church groups, senior centers, and other places where people congregate.

If you would like more information about the Cancer Institute’s Outreach Programs please call (570) 941-7985 (Scranton) or (570) 970-6543 (Wilkes-Barre).

Support Groups

There are two general kinds of support groups available; support groups led by health professionals, and self help groups which are run by people who have cancer.  Some groups offer support, some education, some are for patients alone, some for family members and some for both.  Some are less traditional and may focus on alternative techniques such as visualization relaxation and/or meditation.  All offer encouragement, information, strategies for coping and potentially a wonderful place to form friendships with others who may understand what you are going through.  Though help is available, it can come to you only at your request and with your consent.  Many people suffer needlessly because they are afraid to ask for the help they need.  It is wise to discuss any of your needs frankly with a healthcare professional who can help you determine what help you need and who is best to call to obtain help.
