Locally-Based Research
In March 2000, the Cancer Institute launched its new Cancer Epidemiology
Research Program, designed to study the incidence, distribution and control of
cancer throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania.
Using data from the Pennsylvania Cancer Registry, the Cancer Institute's
Regional Cancer Registry, censuses and pathology studies, the Cancer Institute
has initiated an assessment of cancer incidence and mortality in Lackawanna
County. This effort includes the development and/or use of a Geographic
Information System to map pertinent medical, demographic, environmental,
lifestyle and genetic data. The results of the community-based assessment of
cancer are providing a platform for research strategies and programs that
address cancer-specific problem areas.
